“About National Holidays” - Legal Basis for National Holidays in Japan:
“Act on National Holidays” (July 20, 1948; Latest revision: January 1, 2020) - Regarding the year-end and New Year holidays, government offices and banks will be
closed in accordance with the following legal provisions. Private companies generally
follow this schedule, based on their internal regulations.
- National Government Offices: Article 1, Paragraph 1, Item 3 of the Law on Holidays of Government Offices
- Local Government Offices: Article 4-2, Paragraph 2, Item 3 of the Local Autonomy Law and respective local ordinances
- Banks: Article 5, Paragraph 2 of the Enforcement Order of the Banking Act
Notes
- The year 2024 corresponds to Reiwa 6.
- Japan observes 16 national holidays each year.
- In Japan, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed on the following weekday.
- According to the public holiday law, a day that falls between two national holidays is designated as a public holiday.
